The region is connected to the grid ocean, so you have use of the virtual ocean as well.
A 10x10 regions is equivalent to 100 Second Life sims, however, it doesn't contain sim crossings; the region is completely seamless; prims are shared across the entire region.
To give you a comparison: 100 full size Second Life regions. Set up for a sim in SL (if you are having it created) is currently $350 USD. Monthly tier is currently $209 USD/mth. To own 100 sims in SL (aside from set up fees) is $20,900 USD / mth. You have sim crossings and no prim distribution.
